This piece was commissioned by the BFI to offer an introduction to the work of Kiyoshi Kurosawa, offering a pathway into his work for those new to his films and an overview of his position within contemporary Japanese cinema. In particular, the article discussed the genre aspect to his filmmaking and how he subverts this by blending genres. His earlier films Pulse and Cure stand out for me as key works that set his narratives against a decaying industrial Tokyo backdrop, quite unlike other cinematic representations of the metropolis.
