Having been actively involved in campaigning for the arts and creative industries during Covid, I wrote this article to elucidate on the unjust UK government policy decisions combined with the impact of Covid that resulted in huge economic strain on the freelance and self-employed community particularly within the arts in the UK. So many were excluded from government measures aimed at supporting individuals through the pandemic, while financial recovery measures were primarily directed towards the major culture institutions. Whilst this was crucial, those individuals, primarily working precariously and who are essentially the fabric of the creative industries, largely did not benefit from any filtering down of the support made available and thus many were cut out of financial support measures. Yet for some, turning to the arts during this time was the most natural step, in an effort to highlight the severe implications for the UK creative industries at large, with creatives who form the cornerstones of the sector and culture itself in crisis.
